Fire Prevention
Wise County ESD #1 members are highly trained and dedicated to control and extinguish building, vehicle, and wildland fires. However, we do not want to make a house call to YOU! Here are a few tips to prevent a fire or fire related injury:
Structure or Building:
Install smoke detectors
At least 1 per floor and 1 outside of each bedroom is recommended
Install carbon monoxide detectors
Test and change detector batteries every 6 months
Do not leave the kitchen with the stove on
Keep open flames, such as candles, away from flammable objects like curtains and clothing
Be sure to clean the lint out of your dryer between uses
Avoid from overloading power outlets
Have an escape plan in the instance of a fire
Wildland:
Do not throw lit cigarettes out of your car window
If you are burning outdoors
Cut down the grass or brush around the burn area or create a dirt track around burn area
Have a water source handy and ready to use
Utilize large machinery like a bulldozer or skidsteer to push dirt onto the fire
Avoid burning under trees
Do not burn on windy days
Do not burn while under a burn ban
Keep trees and bushes trimmed away from electrical lines and wires
