For more than seven decades, the Boyd Volunteer Fire Department has proudly served the citizens of Boyd and the surrounding communities with one simple mission—to protect lives and property whenever the need arises.
Founded in 1954, the department began as a small volunteer organization made up of dedicated community members who answered the call to serve their neighbors. Through countless hours of training, fundraising, and volunteer service, these men and women built a department that became a trusted cornerstone of the community.
As Wise County experienced steady residential and commercial growth, so did the demands placed upon the fire department. Increased call volume, larger response areas, evolving emergency services, and modern firefighting equipment required a more sustainable funding model to continue providing quality emergency services.
The Creation of Wise County ESD #1
Recognizing the need for dedicated funding and long-term planning, the citizens approved the creation of Wise County Rural Fire Protection District #1 in 2001. Rural Fire Protection Districts were converted to Emergency Services Districts through legislation in 2003.
As a political subdivision of the State of Texas, the District was established to provide stable, locally governed funding for fire protection and emergency response services. The creation of the ESD ensured that emergency services could continue to grow alongside the community while preserving the strong volunteer tradition that had served the area for decades.
Today, Wise County ESD #1 operates to provide professional emergency services throughout the District.
Growing With Our Community
Over the years, Wise County ESD #1 has continued to invest in the future of emergency services by expanding personnel, enhancing firefighter training, upgrading emergency apparatus, improving equipment, and constructing modern facilities.
These investments have allowed the District to provide:
Professional fire suppression
Wildland firefighting
Rescue operations
Emergency medical first response
Fire prevention and public education
Community risk reduction programs
Mutual aid to neighboring agencies
Every improvement has been made with one goal in mind—providing the highest level of service to the citizens we proudly serve.
Looking Toward the Future
While much has changed since 1954, one thing has remained constant—our commitment to the community.
Wise County ESD #1 continues to plan for the future by investing in our firefighters, facilities, equipment, and training to ensure we are prepared to meet the evolving needs of a growing community.
As we honor the legacy of those who came before us, we remain focused on providing professional, compassionate, and dependable emergency services for generations to come.
